Sodium Acetate vs Glucose vs Methanol: Which Carbon Source to Choose?

Three common external carbon sources for wastewater denitrification are sodium acetate, glucose and methanol, each with different characteristics. Selection should consider denitrification requirements, safety and cost.

Sodium Acetate: Fast denitrification rate, easily utilized by microorganisms, low sludge yield. Unit COD cost is relatively higher, suitable for scenarios requiring high denitrification rate and effluent stability.

Glucose: Moderate cost and easy to obtain, but denitrification rate is lower than sodium acetate, and it may cause filamentous bulking. Dosage and operating conditions need to be controlled.

Methanol: Lower unit COD cost and acceptable denitrification rate, but toxic and flammable, with high storage and safety requirements. There is also a microbial acclimation period at initial dosing.
